Chongqing Jiaotong University was founded in 1951 as a multiple disciplinary University with engineering being the primary focus. The university has also invested in the harmonious development of other disciplines especially management, natural sciences and humanities. Situated in the Nanan District of the Chongqing Municipality the University has a campus occupying an area of over 1600 mu with a floor space of 600,000 square meters well equipped with teaching instruments and facilities of a total value of over 130 million yuan. The university also boasts a library of 1.4 million books and a broad band network that covers every corner of the campus.
Chongqing Jiaotong University is authorized to confer 3 Ph.D. degree programs, 27 masters degree programs and 42 bachelor degree majors It also is qualified to confer masters degree to personnel of the same academic background and authority to confer engineering masters degrees in five different fields. The total enrollment of full time students is over 16000.

Chongqing Jiaotong University has a sound and strong teaching faculty with a total staff of 1700 including 1000 academic faculty members among whom there are 5 State-level candidates of the State “hundreds and thousands talents project” , altogether over 390 professors and associate professors. The 3 academics of China Academy of Engineering namely Professor ZHENG Jielian, Professor HAN Qiwei and Professor LIANG Yincheng are specially engaged professors of the university. In addition the University has 120 talents including top-level candidates of the “thousands and hundreds talents project ” of the Ministry of Communications, scientific and technical talents of the MOC, top class academic and technological leaders of the Chongqing Municipality and provincial- ministerial -level specialists and experts, all entitled to governmental special allowances of the State Council.
Chongqing Jiaotong University also has engaged over 140 part -time professors including academics of the China Academy, the China Academy of Engineering, foreign academics, famous experts and scholars both home and abroad .

The University offers quality teaching and the graduates supply falls short of demand. The University holds placing teaching above everything and values continuous improvement of the teaching quality. In year 2001 the University underwent a random teaching level evaluation of normal college undergraduates given by the Ministry of Education and the evaluation result was “Fine”. The graduate supply of the University falls short of demands and initial employment rate of normal college graduates has exceeded 90% for eight consecutive years. In year 2000 the University was awarded with the designation “Advanced Unit of graduates employment work of national normal college and university”. Over 50 years of operation the University has cultivated over 40 thousand graduates for the State including Mr. ZHENG Jielian, academic of the China Academy of Engineering, Mr. LIU Xiaofeng , vice governor of Sichuan Province and it can be said that the majority of all graduates of the University have gone on to be the technical mainstay and key members in management in national economic and social development, especially in areas of communication.

The University is strong in its scientific and research capacity and has made remarkable achievements in serving local economic construction. In the last five years the University has undertaken over 40 scientific research programs of State grade, over 250 scientific and research programs of provincial and ministerial grades and has published over 100 academic works and around 4000 academic papers. Since the year 2000 , after receiving State invention award in 1996 and the second and the third prizes of the State scientific and technological progress in 1998 ,the University has received another three State prizes namely the State first prize and the second prize for scientific and technological progress, the State second prize for teaching fruit. It has also received over 60 provincial and ministerial prizes for scientific and research and teaching fruits, around 30 national academic association prizes among which 12 scientific and technological fruits have been listed in State and province-ministry promoting programs. The University has obtained and published over 20 patents for inventions thus making outstanding contributions to national economic and social development. The University has issued three public academic journals among which is the journal “Applied Mathematics and Mechanism ” whose chief editor QIAN Weichang is an academic of the China Academy of Science which is mainly operated by the University and included in both SCI and EI . The journal is published in Chinese and English versions to more than 50 states and districts all over the world. The “Journal of Chongqing Jiaotong Univeristy (natural science edition)” is the key scientific and technological journal of China .

The University values international exchange and cooperation and has established friendly cooperative relationships with over 30 foreign universities and scientific research units including Texas University of USA, Hannover University of Germany, St.Peterburg University of Russia and Ha Noi University of Vietnam and others also. Since 2004 the University started to enroll overseas students from all over the world.

The development of the University and its remarkable achievements have been fully affirmed by the Party, government and society. The University has achieved State Honors titles such as “National advanced basic Party organization”, “Special Prize for Ideological and Political Work Creativity” for the journal “Half Month Forum”; “Advanced Working Unit of National Spiritual Civilization Construction ” and “National Model Staff Family”.
